(Alcoholics Anonymous was never Christian in origin; this has meant, by definition, correcting the claims of those who state this is so. The following is a response from Dick B. We will have more to say on this issue.)

Yep! I’m the author Dick B. I am the Christian writer, historian, retired attorney, Bible student and recovered alcoholic who has devoted 19 years to researching the Biblical roots of the recovery movement. My latest title is answer enough to Mr. Lanagan’s personalized criticisms. See Dick B., Dr. Bob of Alcoholics Anonymous: His Excellent Training in the Bible as a youngster in Vermont http://dickb.com/drbobofaa.shtml. I’ll let the documentation be my reply. More important, perhaps, is the critic’s failure to distinguish between an alcoholic and the million or so alcoholics in Alcoholics Anonymous who are Christians, have relied on the power of God, are learning about their early Christian fellowship, and are standing tall on the Word of God and their victory over the Adversary. I am one.

I attended A.A. in the 80’s, for around 12 months. I was told that I could believe in anything as a higher power. It didn’t have to be the God of the Bible. I did notice A.A. is the god that is worshipped. People are told if they stop going to meetings they will drink again. There is no victory, no moving on. There is a real spirit of pride, around how they all have changed their lives. I never heard Jesus mentioned or given any glory. I felt bound as I was told time and time again I would always have to go to meetings. I stopped going, I don’t drink, not from fear, as a Christian I don’t need to. I have Jesus, and who the Son has set free, is free indeed. There is always sin in my life to be dealt with, in Jesus we mature. We don’t stay in the one place forever, fighting the same sin.
